Mobility Aids Grant Scheme in Ireland (with Limerick Focus)

This scheme provides financial assistance to people with mobility issues, primarily (but not exclusively) related to aging, to make essential adaptations to their homes. It's administered by Limerick City and County Council, among other local authorities in Ireland.

Eligibility:

  • Must be assessed as having mobility issues impacting daily living activities within the home.
  • The home must be the primary residence of the person with mobility issues.
  • The applicant must own the home or have the written consent of the owner.
  • Gross household income cannot exceed €30,000 per annum.
  • The maximum grant is €6,000, which may cover 100% of the approved costs.

Role of the Occupational Therapist (OT) in Limerick:

  • Needs Assessment: Limerick-based OTs conduct home visits to assess the individual's mobility challenges within their living environment. They evaluate functional abilities, safety risks, and how mobility issues affect daily tasks.
  • Recommendation Report: OTs prepare a detailed report outlining the necessary home modifications or mobility aids to improve safety, independence, and quality of life. This could include grab rails, ramps, stairlifts, level-access showers, or other adaptations.
  • Grant Application Support: OTs can guide applicants through the grant application process, ensuring the necessary documentation and information are provided to the Limerick City and County Council.
  • Equipment Prescription (if applicable): OTs may recommend specific mobility aids or equipment (e.g., walking aids, shower chairs) and assist in obtaining them.

Builder's Role:

  • Collaboration: Limerick builders should collaborate with the OT and the applicant to understand the specific recommendations outlined in the OT's report.
  • Accurate Quoting: Builders must provide clear and detailed quotes for the proposed works, ensuring they align with grant requirements and building regulations.
  • Quality Workmanship: Builders are responsible for carrying out all work to a high standard, adhering to relevant safety and accessibility guidelines.
  • Communication: Builders should maintain open communication with the OT and applicant throughout the project, addressing any questions or concerns that may arise.
