Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability Limerick

This grant aims to financially assist people with disabilities in making necessary changes to their homes to better suit their needs.

Eligibility:

  • Must be assessed as having a disability that impacts daily living activities.
  • The home must be the primary residence of the person with the disability.
  • The applicant must own the home or have the written consent of the owner.
  • Household income limits apply (up to €60,000 per annum).
  • The maximum grant amount is €30,000, covering up to 95% of the approved costs (depending on income).

Role of the Occupational Therapist (OT):

  • Needs Assessment: The OT conducts a comprehensive assessment of the person's needs within their home environment. This includes evaluating their functional abilities, limitations, and how their disability impacts daily activities.
  • Recommendation Report: The OT prepares a detailed report outlining the necessary home modifications or adaptations to enhance the person's safety, independence, and quality of life.
  • Grant Application Support: The OT can assist the applicant in completing the grant application, providing the necessary documentation, and liaising with the local authority.
  • Equipment Prescription (if applicable): The OT may also recommend assistive devices or equipment to further support the person's needs.

Builder's Role:

  • Consultation: The builder should consult with the OT and the applicant to understand the specific needs and recommendations outlined in the OT's report.
  • Accurate Quoting: The builder should provide accurate and detailed quotes for the proposed adaptations, ensuring they meet the grant requirements and standards.
  • Compliance with Regulations: The builder must ensure that all work is carried out to the highest standards, adhering to building regulations and any relevant disability access guidelines.
  • Communication: The builder should maintain open communication with the OT and the applicant throughout the project, addressing any concerns or changes that may arise.

Steps in the Process:

  1. Contact Local Authority: Inquire about the grant and obtain the application form.
  2. Engage an OT: Arrange for a needs assessment with an OT.
  3. Submit Application: Complete the application form and include the OT's report.
  4. Approval: The local authority will assess the application and determine eligibility.
  5. Obtain Quotes: Get quotes from builders for the recommended adaptations.
  6. Commence Work: Once the grant is approved, work can begin.
  7. Inspection & Completion: The local authority may inspect the completed work.
  8. Claiming the Grant: Submit invoices and receipts for reimbursement.
